4Not for Beginners But Good for Reference  Jun 23, 2006
**The following is from the back of the book, I DID NOT write it**

This book is an updated, omnibus edition, bringing together the sevel titles which previously formed The British Horse Society Manual of Stable Management. (The Horse, Care of the Horse, The Horse at Grass, saddlery, specialist Care of the Competition Horse, The Stable Yard, Watering and Feeding).

Essential reading for students taking the British Horse Society examinations - invaluable to amateurs and professionals alike

Compiled by a panel of experts, this book offers career students and horse owners a comprehensive guide to the care and management of horses and ponies.

Previously published as a series of seven books, the new BHS Complete Manual of Stable Management brings together all seven volumes, conveniently providing a single source of reference. This all-in-one volume has been fully revised and updated to bring it into line with current thinking in the horse world.

Filled with reliable information and advice on modern stable management practices, the book provides a sound foundation for Horse Knowledge and Care Stages 1 to 4 and the BHS Stable Manager's Certificate.

Throughout, the emphasis is on the adoption of correct and safe procedures for the welfare of all who come into contact with horses, as well as for the animals themselves.

My Review: I think that this book has a lot of very good information, certainly the most comprehensive guide on the market that I have found on all things "horse care." I do not believe that a beginner or person lacking a good amount of horse world experience would have the best of luck with it though.

This hefty book had excellent text but not enough pictures to illustrate its procedures and advice. As an example, the adjustment of a bridle and use of different bits. A person with experience can read the text and understand what the book is talking about but I honestly think that a beginner would have been completely lost. The book mentions different bits but does not have them illustrated - which I consider essential for them to be able to differentiate in the descriptions.

Needless to restate, it is not a waste of money. This book is cutting-edge in British horse care and does cover much of the dismounted material that is seen in the BHS Horsemastership (Stages) examinations. I can easily picture an experienced horseperson keeping this as a reference and often using it. I also think it would be a good addition to a public library because of the sheer volume of material it contains.

For beginners I would recommend starting with books by Cherry Hill such as her "Horse Handling & Grooming" or "Horse Health Care" books.
